CHOICE OF ANY
Music & Lyrics by Kia Hellman
There are many things my Dad taught me.
Like how to tie my shoes and mow the lawn.
The importance of giving back to community.
The beauty of a star-lit campsite dawn.
My Dad’s love of this country was steadfast.
Our family immigrated through the years,
finding peace in a place at last,
honoring liberty with their blood, sweat and tears.
My Dad knew the price of freedom.
He watched Grandpa go to war, and he served, too.
He said never take for granted where you come from.
Democracy’s the greatest gift of the red, white and blue.
We’re all equals in this country.
Everyone gets a say.
But if you don’t vote,
You give your voice away.
We fought so hard,
Lost so many
For our ballot card,
Our choice of any.
We fought so hard,
Lost so many
For our ballot card,
Our choice of any.
When I turned eighteen, my Dad brought me
to register with the county clerk.
He spoke of a citizen’s responsibility,
How voting’s a civic duty, not a perk.
Over burgers and cake, we celebrated
my newfound power to vote and elect.
Now my thoughts and opinions will be integrated
into this democracy countless died to protect.
Going home, my Dad let me drive his car.
He was quiet, but I could feel his pride.
I looked out at the land near and far,
More at one with our countryside.
We’re all equals in this country.
Everyone gets a say.
But if you don’t vote,
You give your voice away.
We fought so hard,
Lost so many
For our ballot card,
Our choice of any.
We fought so hard,
Lost so many
For our ballot card,
Our choice of any.
My Dad died a few years ago,
Still believed in the promise of tomorrow,
In this land of the brave and the free,
In change that grows from regular folk like you and me.
We’re all equals in this country.
Everyone gets a say.
But if you don’t vote,
You give your voice away.
We fought so hard,
Lost so many
For our ballot card,
Our choice of any.
We fought so hard,
Lost so many
For our ballot card,
Our choice of any.
Our ballot card,
Our choice,
Our choice of any.
